Practice Makes Perfect at the Spruce Meadows "May Classic"

May 10, 2009

Calgary, AB --- The final competition of the 2009 “May Classic” Tournament was the 1.40m Scotiabank Grand Prix. With $17,500 on the line athletes faced a tough course and stiff competition.

Werner Deeg (GER) designed a demanding but fair course that would allow the best riders to put themselves ahead of the pack. The course featured 16 jumping efforts, used almost every corner of the North American Ring as it spanned over 520 metres and everything had to be completed in less than 90 seconds.

The first round saw 20 of the 25 entries fall to either time faults or rails, leaving five horse/rider combinations for the jump-off.

First in the ring for the second round was Calgarian Lindsay Hitchner and her mare Quipa LS. Hitchner feel prey to a rail and had to sit back and hope her four fault round would hold up.

She didn’t have to wait long as the next entry in the ring, Jaclyn Duff (CAN) put together a clear round. Duff set the time to beat, 53.11 seconds and hoped it would hold up with three still to go in the jump-off.

Andrea Strain (CAN), who had come so close to victory yesterday, was again riding Luigi in the jump-off. Strain put together a perfect round and was a nose quicker than Duff, finishing in 52.98 seconds. Strain finished the “May Classic” off on a high note, taking home top prize in the Scotiabank Grand Prix.

With the “May Classic” now complete, Spruce Meadows is looking forward to once again hosting the best athletes in the world with the “National” Tournament, June 10th – 14th.
