September 9, 2009

SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB --- The charter has landed, the horses are ready and the athletes have arrived, the 2009 Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament begins today! With $2 million of prize on the line the best show jumpers in the world are ready to leave it all on the line in the Spruce Meadows International Ring.

The return of the third ranked rider in the world, German’s Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and her World Cup champion gelding Shutterfly, will bring an added level of excitement and competitiveness to each competition.

The best in the world will need to elevate their game when playing against each other, as the entry for each competition will feature, Olympic Champions, World Cup and World Champions both past and present.

There are ten teams here for the BMO Nations’ Cup including the current European Champions, Switzerland and Olympic Gold Medal American Team. The Canadians will be in the hunt with their team of Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Lamaze, Olympic Team Silver Medalist Ian Millar and former Olympians John Anderson and Beth Underhill.

The $1 million CN International will take place on Sunday. With the retirement of his star stallion Arko, defending champion Nick Skelton will rescind his title to a deserving champion. For any athlete who finishes first they will take a place in the history books as a special few who have taken first place at this difficult grand prix.

This week will be filled with world class competition, a forecast of perfect conditions and fans who love the sport of show jumping.

International Ring competition begins today with the Zeidler Financial Cup at 12:45 pm and followed by the 1.60 m Finning Welcome.
